Penina Championship Description

The Penina Championship Golf Course is the grandfather of all courses in the Algarve and a permanent living memory to its architect and active promoter, Sir Henry Cotton. It was originally paddy fields for rice growing that has been converted into a flat challenging course and especially for the stronger player. Something short of half a million shrubs and trees were planted in the conversion. As the fairways are flat Henry Cotton introduced strategically placed water hazards to catch the unwary long hitter.

played penina today. almost didn't go because of the reviews i have read. First let me say it was EXTREMELY wet, almost impassible in some locations. The area has been hit heavily with rain as of late. I loved the design and layout. The greens and bunkers were in excellent condition despite the weather. They have new management and possibly ownnership in the past 7 months according to the gentleman who greeted me. I thought this was a beautiful course and definatley worth a visit . Awesome design , excellent bunkering and fantastic greens. Sir Henry would be proud.!
